Voters also want to see Congress work, too, and there will be some
areas where clarity and compromise can co-exist. For instance, it now
appears that Obama is willing to extend all of the current tax rates for
another year or two rather than dig in his heels on a tax hike on the
highest bracket. Obama also signaled some flexibility on natural gas
exploration, mainly to get back in the good graces of Pennsylvania
voters. When it comes to spending, runaway regulation, “czars,” and
ObamaCare, however, Republicans should provide confrontation instead of
compromise in order to ensure that voters see the issues involved and
understand exactly where interests lie.

Often when Washington insiders talk “compromise,” they
really mean engineering a situation where nobody really has to take a
position, or responsibility. In those circumstances, clarity is better
served by forcing positions into the open, even if doing so involves
confrontation.
