Which OGs Took A Pass?

Hail, hail, the Gang’s all … not here

In 2005, Republicans like Lindsey Graham joined hands with Democrats across the aisle of the Senate to form the “Gang of 14,” which aimed to keep Bill Frist from changing the rules on filibustering judicial confirmations.  The fourteen Senators helped get some of George Bush’s appointments confirmed while undermining the rest, all while supposedly preserving minority rights in the upper chamber.  Now when Democrats are targeting those minority rights, Graham wants to get the gang together again … and is learning a lesson about bipartisanship

. . . what motivation would Republicans have to rescue the Democrats after having been locked out for over a year?

CBO study says banks won’t bear the cost of new fees

This only comes as news to people who haven’t worked in the private sector, of course — which means the entirety of the Obama administration and most of the Democratic leadership in Congress.  It takes a CBO analysis for them to understand that increasing costs on businesses means increasing costs on their customers — or forcing them out of business altogether.  This time, the CBO explains the impact of raising fees on financial institutions to the clueless

Attention, GOP: John McCain Is The Problem

Attention, GOP: John McCain is the problem

By Michelle Malkin  •  February 22, 2010 02:18 PM

McCain has never admitted he was wrong about his support of:

*The $700 billion all-purpose, earmark-stuffed TARP bailout;

*The $25 billion auto bailout;

*The $300 billion mortgage entitlement bailout; and

*The first $85 billion AIG bailout.

His latest McLame-est excuse for supporting TARP? He was “misled.” Via the Arizona Republic

All the warning signs and red flags about Henry Paulson’s incompetence and untrustworthiness were there before McCain joined the Chicken Little crowd. (See September 22, 2008, “Why Henry Paulson must be contained.”) Stalwart fiscal conservatives like GOP Rep. Mike Pence saw through the smokescreen and kept their heads. McCain’s trying to have it both ways — refusing to admit he was wrong, blaming crapweasel Paulson for duping him, and creating the illusion that he’ll be competent enough to resist the next inevitable bailout temptation when White House, Treasury, and Fed officials hit the panic button.

He blew it on TARP.

Blew it on the auto bailout.

Blew it on the mortgage entitlement bailout.

Blew it on the AIG bailout.

Blew it on amnesty.

Blew it on campaign finance.

Blew it on global warming.

In short: McCain blows.

I’ve already warned about McCain Regression Syndrome. The GOP hasn’t even begun to cure itself.

“Not Industry Friendly.”

Congress vs. Toyota: Sudden deceleration?

Is this really scandalous?

After all, Toyota is far from the only company that is less than overjoyed with the Obama administration. More important, it is looking more and more like the administration and Congressional Dems overplayed their hands regarding Toyota’s recall woes

It Begins

WaPo columnist: That insane pilot sounds kind of like a tea partier, huh?

The irony of all this is that violent IRS-hating cranks have been around for decades, long before tea parties were a twinkle in Rick Santelli’s eye. The NYT, to its credit, puts today’s attack in context by highlighting a few examples from over the years — while also taking care to note that a firebomb set in 1990 came packed with a tea bag. (Wink wink.) And a bonus irony: Taxes have actually been a surprisingly minor issue for tea partiers thus far, due in part to the fact that Obama and the Dems haven’t made any aggressive moves on that front yet. The tea party, in my experience, has focused much more heavily on cutting spending, ending bailouts, and auditing the Fed than dismantling the IRS, let alone flying planes into it.

Update: PoliPundit supplies a lengthy, yet perhaps not complete, list of everyone Joe Stack was mad at. It wasn’t just the IRS.

“That’s Not What The Law Says.”

Gregg blasts Orszag over TARP “piggy bank”

Orszag has to get Congress to amend the law in order to use that TARP money for other purposes, but even the Democrats in Congress should be wary of allowing the executive branch that kind of slush fund — which is exactly what this is. The Constitution makes clear that the legislative branch controls appropriations, and for good reason. That is almost the only way Congress can hold the executive branch accountable for its spending and actions. Allowing any President to control tens of billions of dollars in blank-check funds strips the people’s branch of an important check on executive power.
