Liberal Self-Dealing And Financial Crises

As Americans struggle to make sense of a devastating succession of financial crises — from teetering banks to a collapsed stock market to bankrupt car companies to underfunded public employee pensions and now exploding state deficits — we can see in each the malignant expression of a ... More »

Opportunities For Change To Fix The Fiascoes Of '10

The year began with Democratic high hopes for a veto-proof majority in Congress and a Democrat in the White House. It ended with a bitter and sweeping defeat for Democrats as government "stimulus" failed to ignite the economy, Congress passed a raft of unneeded and unwanted legislation, and ... More »

We Need New Ones

New Vaccines, Stat! (National Review Online)

The vaccine makers are in a bind — and public health is in danger.

By Jonathan (Josh) Bloom, Ph.D., Gilbert Ross, M.D.

The development of new antibiotics has slowed to a trickle, just when we need them most. As drug-resistant bacteria are on the rampage worldwide, we find ourselves in a most precarious situation — one not unlike the one we faced in the pre-antibiotic era, before penicillin, when staphylococcal and pneumococcal infections were the dominant pathogens. Now MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) kills more people than AIDS every year, and other multiple-drug-resistant organisms have appeared, leaving doctors with few therapeutic weapons for treating a number of prevalent infections.

How did this happen? Much of the blame can be laid at the feet of the FDA. (ACSH)

… A “Moral Panic.”

Video: Mix politicians, reporters, alcohol, and caffeine, and you get …

The entire exercise is absurd. As I wrote before, neither alcohol nor caffeine are dangerous to people when consumed in moderation. Both are potentially dangerous when consumed excessively, especially alcohol, which can kill people through acute overdosing. The combination of the two do not produce any dangerous byproducts. Yet the FDA has banned the combination as a manufactured beverage, even though people mix the two on their own without incident in many other ways, while “allowing” manufacture and consumption of both separately.

This isn’t about keeping harmful products out the marketplace. It’s about substituting government mandates for individual choice, and having Chuck Schumer and his merry band of elites in Washington act as den mothers for adults.

Is A Deal Near?

Video: Dem calls for pitchforks if GOP extends current tax rates in deal?

Fox News highlights McCaskill’s whiny response at Republican insistence on keeping all of the current tax rates in place for at least the next 2-3 years, apparently believing that this means that people keeping their own money is somehow a gift from the government. If Republicans oppose more government confiscation, McCaskill argues, then people really should start grabbing pitchforks, or something

Missourians know the difference between a tax cut and a tax hike; the latter is when one has to pay more than they did before, which is exactly what McCaskill wants to happen for small business owners. It’s the government’s money, dammit, and those pesky Republicans want to stop us from taking it!

Democrats To Join In As Well?

GOP readies rarely-used procedural attack on EPA aggression

When Republicans took control of the House in the midterms, they gained a powerful tool in combating regulatory excess with the power of the purse.  Senate Republicans may use a different tool in their minority efforts to contain the EPA’s efforts to impose climate-change regulation by fiat, a rarely-used law called the Congressional Review Act.  Created in 1996, the law essentially allows Congress to veto regulatory changes created by executive branch agencies, and may become a sledgehammer in battling the Obama administration’s regulatory innovations
